Negative Space Photos

Why do some photos attract more attention than others?

Composition is a big part of achieving interesting photos.

We all know the rule of thirds and how well it works to create an appealing photo. There are several other composition techniques that result in amazing photos.

Sometimes cramming objects and colors into a photo can overwhelm the viewer - not in a good way.

Have you heard of negative space photography?

This is a photograph that you compose with the background as your main coverage and the main object placed discreetly in the frame.

This type of photography often creates a sense of mystery and can evoke strong emotions.

Tips:

  • Look for solid colors or soft textures to fill your photograph and place your object or subject in a corner.
  • A good guideline is to put twice as much background - negative space - in your photo.
  • Don’t use portrait mode or any other mode that has a shallow depth of field. You want everything to be in focus in the photograph.

    Remember, sometimes less is more.
